How to Unlock Equipment

When you hover over a piece of gear, you’ll notice it’s labeled as “Unidentified.” This means it cannot be used by your character until it’s properly identified.

To remove this status and unlock the item, you’ll need a Scroll of Wisdom. These scrolls are useful but not overly abundant, especially in the early stages of the game. Though they can be found throughout the world, they aren’t guaranteed drops. Once you have a Scroll of Wisdom, simply right-click it and select the unidentified item you wish to reveal.

After identification, the “Unidentified” tag will vanish, and randomized stats will appear based on the item type. These may include increased weapon damage, added energy shield, or improved elemental resistances.

Where to Find Scrolls of Wisdom

Scrolls of Wisdom don’t come from specific enemies or bosses. Instead, they drop randomly from nearly any enemy in the game. Whether you're clearing packs of wolves or battling undead hordes, any defeated foe might leave behind a Scroll of Wisdom.

Because these scrolls are essential but not always easy to come by, it’s wise to use them strategically. As you progress, you’ll frequently find better gear, so avoid spending your scrolls too quickly unless you're in dire need of an upgrade or have a surplus.

Additionally, some vendors sell Scrolls of Wisdom. For instance, Una at the Clearfell Encampment offers them for 25 gold, which is a reasonable price early in the game, especially since gold is relatively easy to earn.

The Hooded One

Another way to identify gear is by visiting The Hooded One in the Clearfell Encampment. Unlocking this character requires completing the Cemetery of Eternals quest. Once available, he can identify all your items for free, making him a valuable resource when you’re near a settlement.

This means Scrolls of Wisdom are mainly useful when you're out in the wild and far from town. Rely on The Hooded One whenever possible to conserve your scrolls for more remote areas.
